5 ways leaders win at work by winning at home first

What if your greatest leadership growth didn’t come from another book or podcast...

But, instead came from your evening routine, your morning quiet time, or your weekly date night?

I know it sounds crazy!

But the truth is this: leaders who win at home first lead differently at work.

These leaders are not distracted, divided, or desperate for validation.

Instead, they lead from a position of confidence and purpose; thus, the results are undeniable.

Recently, I've asked my clients how they've been showing up better at work, since they’ve been more intentional at home lately.

Keep in mind - these leaders are not perfect at home, they’re just more intentional than they’ve been in years, and eager to share their progress with me!

Their responses have all been similar - more purpose, more confidence, able to be their true self - thus the following CLEAR framework captures this feedback!

Leaders who win at home are C.L.E.A.R. at work!

C – Clarity of Purpose

Leaders who are winning at home are able to lead at work with deeper clarity.

They aren’t just chasing metrics, they’re pursuing meaning.

It's about purpose over profits.

This purpose and 'why' guides decisions and energizes their teams.

When you're winning at home, you stop being reactive at work and start being intentional.

L – Lead by Example

The leaders that I gravitate towards live a life that I want more of.

They have a strong exercise routine, love their family, and model healthy priorities.

Leaders who win at home model a behavior that is desired by team members.

These leaders get the best out of us.

People may respect your title, but they’ll follow your example.

E – Emotional Intelligence

Healthy relationships at home sharpen your EQ.

Knowing how to handle conflict in your marriage, empathize with a teenage daughter, all help you in relating with your employees.

That maturity shows up in the office, especially in pressure moments.

You listen better.

You lead with empathy.

You connect deeply.

And in conflict, you respond, not react.

Strong at home = stable at work.

A – Attention & Focus

When your home life is steady, your mind is clear.

You’re not carrying stress from marital tension or parenting guilt.

You’re not weighed down by guilt, drama, or distraction.

You show up at work with focus, creativity, and presence.

Winning at home permits you to be fully present at work.

R – Resilient Energy

Taking care of your mind, body, and soul creates energy and endurance.

Spending time in prayer and scripture equips you for the long game.

You’re not leading from burnout or insecurity.

You’re leading from overflow and strength.

When you win at home, you lead at work from overflow, not exhaustion.

When your foundation at home is strong,

your performance at work accelerates.

Don’t separate home and work, but instead invest in both.

And you’ll lead with a CLEAR advantage

BTW, here is the coolest Nike ad that captures the idea that when you win at home first, you do have a clear advantage at work!
