Marriage and Career strengthened after a loss of a child | Podcast Interview with Andy Schoonover, CEO of CrowdHealth

You have heard it said before:

  • ‘your pain becomes your platform’
  • ‘your problem becomes your purpose’
  • ‘Your mess becomes your message.’

I could keep going, but you get the point.

This week’s podcast episode is all about a leader who made that transition from overcoming pain to finding his purpose.

Andy Schoonover and his wife have had a couple of life-impacting events, and both times they made the decision to rise up and go forward. To rise and go.

The first one was the loss of a child. New in their marriage and Andy new in his faith – he could have easily chosen to be mad at God and brought toxicity and anger into his marriage.

Instead, he grew closer to God, as well as his marriage.

Years later, with their other daughter, they experienced a frustrating insurance battle after what was thought to be a routine procedure.

Once again, Andy chose to turn this problem into an opportunity, thus launching a new company in the insurance space.

This episode is awesome – bring some tissues. 😢

Also – come with an open mind as you may be in a battle right now, and this may help change your perspective and overcome your current challenge.

I know it was helpful for me.

In this episode, you’ll discover…

  • Why discipline makes you a “super dad” (even when you have a million other things to take care of) ([4:28]
  • How setting expectations with your family and team prevents one of them from stealing too much of your time ([6:23]
  • Why selfishness rips marriages apart in unexpected ways (and how to use your marriage to become selfless) ([9:42]
  • The “Partnership Trick” that makes your wife happy when you go to happy hour networking events ([10:28]
  • How to bounce back in your faith, marriage, and career after losing your first child ([13:04]
  • The “Pain Becomes Your Platform” secret for leveraging your most heartbreaking circumstances to grow your business and bless others ([17:47]
  • Why trying to make your kids happy all the time is the most unloving thing you can do as a parent ([26:48]
  • The simple “regardless of” mindset shift that prevents divorce conversations from happening (even when your marriage is on the rocks) ([34:24]
  • How the Lord transforms your most humiliating failures into massive success ([53:05]

Andy Schoonover’s Bio

After graduating with a BS in Commerce from the McIntire School at the University of Virginia, Andy started his career at Host Marriott Corporation (now Host Hotels & Resorts, NYSE: HST) in the Treasury, Asset Management and Acquisition and Development groups and completed transactions valued at approximately $1.5 billion. He then moved to Silicon Valley to attend Stanford Business School where he got that entrepreneurial itch. Andy and Chris Hendriksen, his business school roommate, founded Blue Canyon Capital. Blue Canyon Capital then purchased Valued Relationships, Inc (VRI) in Dayton, Ohio. Andy became CEO and served in that role for five years.

After a fourfold growth in revenues, the majority of VRI was sold to Pamlico Capital in 2014. VRI investors received a gross return of approximately 9x their investment. Today Andy is CEO of CrowdHealth and lives in Austin, Texas with his wife Stephanie where they are devoted parents to their daughter Grace’s legacy, daughters Ava and Butler, and their pup.
